Samsung Pocket Patrol
IntentTo create a useful tool designed to help beachgoers identify hidden ocean hazards like rip currents and other dangers.
The challengeIntegrate Samsung’s latest technology into a user friendly app identifying hazards in real time. In partnership with Surf Life Australia, we had to use real-time data from lifeguards and combine it with AR, GPS and app criteria to educate swimmers. The app had to be easy to use and be app lite so that coverage on remote stretches of coastline would be possible.
DeliveryAs part of Samsung’s “Launching People” campaign, we created an app tool that was endorsed and used by Surf Life Saving Australia to prevent more accidents and drownings on beaches in New South Wales. With precision, users can look through their smartphones camera to pinpoint dangers for themselves and learn more about how to avoid them.
Lifesavers can input real time data of rip current, jelly fish, shallow sand banks, sand drop off and submerged rocks that instantly communicated to everyone on the beach.
Results3600 downloads in first 4 weeks. 13.2 million reached through social posts and online film. 144 PR articles reaching an audience of 20 million Brand engagement scores up 15%
Two in three people who believe they can identify a rip are unable to do so when put to the test. With young men 15-39 most likely to get caught up in rips Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA) partnered with Samsung and their creative agency to develop an innovative idea that used mobile technology to help promote safety and awareness on Australian beaches.
I was involved in this project as the Lead Digital Designer with Leo Burnett. I was responsible for prototyping through to final delivery of creative assets including app design and development. Working with a development team at UsTwo we delivered a fully function app that went into use on beaches in NSW and Queensland. The app won countless awards and most notably picked up Gold at the Cannes Festival.
